Selecting Sinks

Selecting a sink isn’t usually at the top of someone’s to-do list when they start to design their new kitchen, but with such an important role to play in the flow and function of your kitchen, it’s worthy of discussion!

How many sinks do you need and how large should they be?

The layout of your kitchen and width of your cabinets, as well as how you want to use it will have an impact on the type and number of sinks you need.

As well as your main sink, consider whether you want a sink in your island or butler’s pantry – for cocktails, washing up or convenience.

If you love to cook, you might want a large deep sink for washing bowls, baking trays and pots. Otherwise, you may just need enough space to hand wash any items too fragile for the dishwasher.

How many bowls and drainers?

Think about the space you’ll have in the kitchen specifically, where the oven, cooktop and dishwasher will be placed and where your windows are. This will impact the area available for your sink and whether you can have multiple bowls and a single or double drainer.

If you have the space, an extra bowl for rinsing fruit and vegetables or draining pasta is a great idea. A sink with a drainer is a very practical solution but may impact on the available bench-top preparation space in your kitchen.

Top mount, flush mount or under mount?

The type of mounting you can select for your sink will depend on the benchtop material that you wish to use.  Topmount sinks can be installed on top of all bench surfaces.

Solid surface benchtops can use undermount sinks (where the sink is installed below the bench top) flushmount sinks.

See below this handy guide from our supplier, Oliveri, as to the mounting configuration options that are available.

Materials and finish?

Sinks can be manufactured from a variety of materials including stainless steel, granite or seamless solid surface materials (integrated within your benchtop).
